OEM Solutions for XRF Systems

OEM Options Image

Amptek offers a complete line of OEM detectors, preamplifiers, digital processors, and power supplies, and can work with you to help develop custom solutions unique to your needs. We provide established and emerging OEM customers a fast track to the market with our modular systems that will meet current needs, while being flexible enough to adapt to your product roadmap. The below options are typical configurations. Please contact us for custom solutions.

Any Amptek detector can be used in any of the configurations seen below; this includes our Si-PIN, SDD,  FAST SDD®, and CdTe detectors.

We supply a software developer’s kit (SDK) for our digital processors, allowing easy integration into your system.

Where do I Start?

1. Detector Selection:  Please review the Amptek Detector Selection Guide. This will guide you through the detector selection process which discusses performance and cost trade-offs.

2. System Configuration:  Depending on your company’s hardware and software capabilities for XRF systems, and the analytical needs of your target customer base, there are several  choices available for detectors and electronics.  Options 1 and 2 below are fairly easy to implement, as they are complete systems which include a detector, preamplifier, digital processor and power supply.  Options 3, 4, 5 and 6 are listed in order of increasing difficulty for implementation, and are recommended for organizations with XRF experts who can provide both hardware and software support.

What Else do I Need?

This will vary based upon the type of instrument you are developing and your target market(s).  At a minimum, you should expect to develop or source the following:

  • X-ray source (X-ray tube or radioisotope)
  • Housing or enclosure for detector, electronics and source
  • CPU to run analytical software
  • Analytical software
  • Display and graphical user interface (GUI)
  • Applications and instrument calibration expertise

  • Option 1 +

The X-123, X-123SDD and X-123CdTe are the best complete systems for OEM applications where fast market entry through reduced development time is important.  The units are completely packaged and only require a +5VDC power supply and either USB or RS-232 connection to a computer.  The X-123 platform represents the culmination of years of electronics and X-ray detector development at Amptek. Our focus has always been to create small, low power, high performance instruments while keeping them simple to operate. The X-123 exemplifies this philosophy by providing in a single package the XR-100CR X-Ray Detector and its Charge Sensitive Preamplifier; the DP5 Digital Pulse Processor with pulse shaper, MCA, and interface; and the PC5 Power Supply.

    It includes:

    1. X-ray detector (Si-PIN, SDD or CdTe)
    2. Digital pulse processor & MCA
    3. Power supply

    Features of the X-123:

    • Simple to operate
    • Low power (1.2 W)
    • Small size – 2.7 x 3.9 x 1 in. (7 x 10 x 2.5 cm)
    • Light weight – 6.3 oz. (180 g)
    • USB and RS-232 communication
    • Accommodates all types of Amptek detectors

  • Option 2 +

The XR-100CR and the XR-100SDD can be paired with the PX5 lab-grade DPP, MCA & power supply.  This is physically the largest configuration, but offers the best performance.  Both components are fully packaged with standard connectors.

  • Option 3 +

The XR-100CR or XR-100SDD with the DP5 and PC5 is an option that requires some assembly and possibly a custom enclosure depending on the application on the part of the customer.

  • Option 4 +

The AXR detector, PA-230 preamp and DP5/PC5 shown here is equivalent to the X-123 without any enclosures or packaging.  You will need to assemble the system and address heat-sinking for the detector as well as custom enclosures for the AXR detector, preamp and DP5/PC5 in order to avoid electronic interference.

  • Option 5 +

    Option 5A: XR-100

The XR-100 as a stand-alone product is for experts only.  It contains the detector (Si-PIN, SDD or CdTe), and preamplifier.  You will need to provide several external power supplies, a shaping amplifier and MCA or digital pulse processor, and communication with the host computer.

Figure 12. XR100 box alone. Includes only the detector and preamplifier.

    Option 5B: AXR + PA-210 or PA-230

The AXR/PA-210 or AXR/PA-230 alone, is for experts in the field. Any Amptek detector can be used (Si-PIN, SDD, or CdTe). There are many options for this configuration as can be seen in the pictures below. The you will either need to provide custom heat-sinking and a custom enclosure for the AXR/PA-210 or AXR/PA-230, or order the housings shown below. Additionally, the you will need to provide several external power supplies, a shaping amplifier and MCA, or digital processor, and communication with the host computer.

  • Option 6 +

This option is the same as the X-123 except the detector/preamplifier have been removed from the electronics box and connected with a flexible cable. Provided in order to operate the detector remotely from its electronics box. Any Amptek detector can be used including Si-PIN, SDD, or CdTe.  The maximum recommended cable length is 20 inches.
